Whitham Planning & Design, Recent Works and Plein Air Paintings by Maggie Martin
The series of paintings shown during the December 5, 2025 WPD Open House are recent oils done ‘en Plein Air’ on location in the Finger Lakes area. This collection of work features local landmarks that have distinctive character, such as ‘Tburg Gimme’, ‘Eagle Hotel,’ and ‘Circus Building’. As plein air paintings, all of the work is done outdoors, on site, and in all conditions. Maggie takes a portable French easel, palette of oil paints, and fresh canvas to site, painting through changes in light and weather. The work is completed fully in situ. The work featured here was completed during spring, summer, and fall of 2025. The immediacy of the act of plein air painting results in a visual dialogue between the subject and the atmosphere of that moment. Fresh interpretation of a familiar subject becomes a unique visual experience with the richness of oil colors. Maggie is a lifelong Artist based in Watkins Glen and Hector, NY. Initially trained as an illustrator, Maggie studied painting at the Art Students League in New York City and has made a career as a painter, gallerist, and arts leader.
