Rob Morache: Comfortable with Uncertainty

I’ve always had a fascination with shapes, structures, lines, contours, spaces, and the imagery they suggest to the viewer. I attended Syracuse University hoping to translate this fascination into architecture but then found myself in a profession which was more focused on money, codes, and regulations than creative exploration or elevating the human spirit. The Buddha said that expectation is the root of all suffering. Lo and behold, architects literally create expectations! Inevitably, the outcome of any architectural endeavor seldom meets all the designer’s expectations, leading to a life of quiet disappointment.

In my pursuit of art, I prefer the opposite of expectations and disappointment. When I draw, I simply sit down and start sketching flowing lines and intersecting shapes without any preconception of what the result will be. When making sculpture, I begin by bending some copper tubing and letting the resulting shapes inspire my next moves. The only constraints are those inherent in the materials, the process, and the moves already made. Letting each artwork evolve from a few basic first steps leads to results that always surprise and delight me. I have opinions about what each finished piece represents, but I do not title my work, preferring the viewer to exercise their imagination and create their own interpretation of what I created. Creating art this way is much the opposite of my experience as an architect and requires only one thing: being comfortable with uncertainty.
