Carl Whittaker: ART for TAKAYNA comes to Ithaca NY (Sponsored by St. Luke Lutheran Church and Collegetown Community Collective)

Carl Whittaker is (I am) a Trumansburg resident and artist and illustrator, working mostly in oils and watercolors, also sometimes in pencil, colored pencil, and pen and ink. I also love to play with smallsculptures and model airplanes. I've always had a strong interest in nature and most of my work draws on this in some way. I studied drawing, painting, and scientific illustration at Cornell University, alongside a major in History (Concentration in History of Science). In 2017 and 2024 I participated in the Art for Takayna residencies in the Takayna/Tarkine wilderness in Tasmania, and have had some of my paintings in the Bob Brown Foundation's Art for Takayna Exhibitions in Hobart and Melbourne. The works in this exhibition are derived from those experiences or thematically related.

Art for Takayna is the Bob Brown Foundation's revamped and re-energized Tarkine in Motion project for artists in Takayna/Tarkine. It's Australia's biggest environmental arts project- four days in the wilderness in northwestern Tasmania. Artists in all disciplines and media can be immersed in wild nature, be inspired, and create works that will be shown allaround Australia to raise awareness and funding for the campaign to save Takayna/Tarkine as a new national park and-or extension of the Tamanian Wildrness World Heritage Preserve. The Bob Brown Foundation is a Tasmanian conservation organization devoted to preserving Tasmanian and Australian wild places and wildlife.
